This is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all supported devices that work with TwonkyMedia manager. There are hundreds of other devices not listed here which also work with TwonkyMedia manager and TwonkyMedia server. You can view those at the DLNA website.

Note: Not all of these devices have been tested by PacketVideo. Some have been reported by others to work with TwonkyMedia manager. If you believe there is an error in this list, or have new additions, please contact us.

Important: This list is being continually updated. You can always view the most current list on theTwonky forum.

  • How can I play all my music in my library without creating a playlist?

Double-click on the first song in Album Art view. Every song in your library will play.

  • What are the new features in the TwonkyMedia 5 server?

It has a new database structure that uses less memory, server-side user-playlist support and new transcoding architecture. The TwonkyMedia server also includes a new plug-in that includes support for Internet feeds like Flickr photo, Internet videos and new handpicked Internet radio stations. It also contains many other improvements that are too numerous to name here.

  • Why do I get a security alert when I run TwonkyMedia manager for the first time?

Because TwonkyMedia manager communicates with other PCs and consumer electronics (CE) devices over your network, Windows® firewall asks your permission before allowing this. Just click the Unblock button and you’ll never be bothered with this message again. You can learn more about Windows firewall here.

  • I’ve finished installing TwonkyMedia, now what?

First, make sure there are MP3s in your My Music folder, digital photos in your My Photos folder and digital videos in your My Videos folder. If your media is located in other folders, go to Basic Server Settings to add those folders to the content directories that TwonkyMedia scans. If you have a digital media adapter on your network, go to Settings to give it a friendly name like Family Room Roku and pick an icon for it. Do the same with your PCs. Now visit the Help section in TwonkyMedia manager to learn more.

  • What media formats does TwonkyMedia manager support?

TwonkyMedia manager supports the following formats:

    • .ASF - Windows Media Video (codecs: WMV video and WMA audio)
    • .BMP - Bitmap Image
    • .FLV, .F1V, .F4V - Standard Quality Video (codecs: Flash Video: Sorenson Spark H.263 video codec & MP3 audio codec)
    • .GIF - Graphics Interchange Format
    • .JPG, .JPEG, .JPE - Joint Photographic Experts Group image
    • .MP3 - MPEG Audio Layer 3 (codec: MPEG Audio)
    • .MP4 - High Quality Video (codecs: MP4: H.264 video & HE-AAC audio)
    • .MP4 - MPEG-4 Video (codecs: Microsoft MPEG-4 v1, Microsoft MPEG-4 v2, Microsoft MPEG-4 v3 & ISO MPEG-4 v1
    • .MPEG, .MPG, .MLV - MPEG-1 (codecs: MPEG-1 video & MP2 audio)
    • .PNG - Portable Network Graphics
    • .WAV - Linear Audio (codecs: Uncompressed PCM-encoded & ADPCM-encoded)

Please note: The media formats supported by your connected devices will determine the media formats you can play on those devices.

  • How can I import my CDs into TwonkyMedia manager?

The easiest way to do this is to encode them using iTunes®. Open iTunes and follow these steps:

    1. Go to Edit/Preferences to ensure ‘Import using MP3 encoder’ and ‘Automatically retrieve CD names from Internet’ are checked. Click OK.
    2. Uncheck all songs on a CD but one.
    3. Right click on that song and select ‘Convert song to MP3’

  • Why can’t I play music purchased from iTunes?

DRM-protected songs, such as music purchased from the Apple iTunes Music Store, are not supported for playback on TwonkyMedia manager.

  • Where can I purchase music that works with TwonkyMedia manager?

Look for websites that sell downloadable MP3 files like Amazon.com®, Walmart®, Napster® or eMusic®. These files have album art, all of the metadata tags entered, and they are encoded at high data rates, so they sound great.

  • How can I hide some of my content so TwonkyMedia manager doesn’t share it on my network?

Simple. Just move the content you don’t want to share outside of your designated media folders (e.g. My Music, My Photos, My Videos).

  • How can I edit my photo descriptions and titles?

After photos have been transferred from your camera, you'll notice that the file names are a combination of letters and numbers. To name your photos in a more appropriate manner, right-click on the filename you want to change, right-click on the mouse, and then select Edit Metadata. You can now type in any title for the photo that you want. Press Enter when you are finished to save your changes. You can enter your own description, rating or keywords if desired. All metadata changes—including filename are stored in the TwonkyMedia database, so the original photos are left untouched.

  • How do I get my Flickr photos into TwonkyMedia manager?

Go to the Media Feed tab under Settings and enter your Flickr username.

  • What are the system requirements for TwonkyMedia manager?

Operating Systems: Windows XP®, Windows Vista®
Processor: Pentium-class CPU equivalent or better. 2.0GHz or faster processor
Memory: 1024MB minimum. 2048MB recommended for Vista.
Monitor: Requires a monitor with a screen resolution of 800x600 or greater. 1024x768 or larger recommended.
Sound Card: 16-bit sound card and speakers (or headphones)
Internet Connection: Active Internet connection is required to access online feeds. (Broadband connection recommended)

  • How can I view videos and photos full-screen?

For full screen playback of photos and video click the full screen icon. You can find it in the lower right-hand corner of the play window. Click it once more to go back to normal view.

  • How do I view my Flickr photos in TwonkyMedia manager?

Go to the Photos tab and click on the Folder View button. Click on Flickr on the left hand side of the screen. Now you can navigate your Flickr folders and view photos by double-clicking on them.

  • How can I view Flickr photos on my TV?

Many new TVs are DLNA-enabled. Refer to the User’s Guide that came with your TV to learn how to select TwonkyMedia as a server. Next, use your remote to select Flickr under Photo. You should now be able to view online photos on your TV.

If you have an older TV that is not Internet-enabled, you can purchase a low-cost digital media adapter (DMA) that lets you display photos or video on your TV. Using the remote that came with your DMA, select TwonkyMedia as a server. You should then see Flickr under Photos. Use the arrows on the remote to select the folders and photos you want to view.

  • Where does TwonkyMedia manager get its album art?

TwonkyMedia manager will display album art that has been stored in MP3 files (as well as other popular audio file formats). It will also read a JPEG image that is placed in an album folder. It doesn’t really matter what the image file is named, but most programs name it "folder.jpg". TwonkyMedia manager does not currently import album art from iTunes..

  • How can I add album art if it’s missing?

Most music software will let you add album art to music files. Just launch Windows Media Player, right click on a file and select Find Album Info. It will display a list of matches on the right side of the screen. Click on the one that matches best and press Next. Click the Finish button and you’re done. You can also use Winamp or other software to do this.

If Winamp® or Windows Media Player fails to find the album art you’re looking for, go to Amazon.com or Wikipedia and type in the name of the album you’re looking for. Once you locate the album, double-click on the album art and right-click to save it to the folder containing songs for that album. Then rename the image "folder.jpg". TwonkyMedia manager will display the album art the next time it scans your music folder.

  • How do I import media into TwonkyMedia manager?

There is no need to do anything special to import or add new media to TwonkyMedia manager. Just drag your new music, photo or video files into the directories you set in the Server Settings tab. In most cases these folders will be in your My Documents folder (e.g., My Music). The content will automatically appear in seconds.

  • Why is some of my media missing after first installing TwonkyMedia manager?

The first time TwonkyMedia manager runs, its media server scans your hard disk to locate all photos, music and videos. If you have a lot of media this can take several minutes. If you open TwonkyMedia manager before the scanning process is complete, not all of your media will be visible yet. The easiest way to fix this problem is to close TwonkyMedia manager and reopen it after a few minutes.

  • I’d like to have the TwonkyMedia server running all of the time but don’t want to leave my PC on. What do you suggest?

TwonkyMedia server software is preinstalled on HP® MediaSmart® servers as well as NAS devices from Linksys®, HP, Buffalo and others.

  • Why don’t I see any highly rated playlists or slideshows?

Highly rated playlists and slideshows only appear when you rate at least one of each media type with a five star rating.

  • Why don’t I see content in the Now Playing window when I preview it?

Only content that is in a playback queue is shown in the Now Playing window. When you double-click on media like a song, it’s not automatically added to the queue. If you’d like to add it to the queue, just drag and drop it on the local renderer icon. You can also double-click on a playlist to add its contents to the playback queue.

  • Why can’t I control XBOX 360 or PS3 using TwonkyMedia manager?

Not all digital media players can be controlled externally. They can still be used with TwonkyMedia manager, however; you just use their interface to select the content you want on the TwonkyMedia manager server.

  • Do you have a list of digital media players that can be controlled externally?

Yes. The following devices can be controlled externally from TwonkyMedia manager:

    D-Link® DSM-320 (audio, video, photos)
    Freecom® MusicPal (audio only)
HP Smart Media TV (photos & video only)
    Philips® Streamium® SL400i (audio, video, photos)
Philips Streamium NP2500 (plays audio-only) – Coming soon!
Philips Streamium NP2900 (plays audio-only) – Coming soon!
    Roku™ SoundBridge (audio only)
    TEAC WAP-5000 (audio-only – no seek support)
TerraTec Noxon 2 iRadio (audio-only – no seek support)
TerraTec Noxon 2 Audio (audio-only – no seek support)
    ZyXEL DMA-1000 (audio, video, photos)

  • Why doesn’t my server always appear immediately after launching TwonkyMedia manager?

Once you select a media server it’s automatically remembered so the next time you launch TwonkyMedia manager it looks to see if your server is available. To meet DLNA requirements however, the TwonkyMedia server sometimes has to wait a little bit before it can announce itself on the network. That’s why you might sometimes see another server appear for a few seconds while TwonkyMedia manger is looking for the server you last selected.

  • When I edit metadata in TwonkyMedia manager, the changes only appear in TwonkyMedia manager. How can I update the original file?

All metadata changes in TwonkyMedia manager are made in our database so they are non-destructive. You can use Windows Media Player, Winamp or Apple’s iTunes to edit ID3 tags on music files or Windows Vista to edit photo metadata. Metadata changes made this way should automatically appear in TwonkyMedia manager.

  • How can I import playlists into TwonkyMedia manager?

iTunes playlists should be automatically imported into TwonkyMedia manager. To import other types of playlists, try copying them into the shared content folder for music (e.g., My Music). If the playlist doesn’t appear in a few minutes, you can force a content rescan by clicking on Server Settings and pressing the Rescan Content button.

  • Why are all Internet feeds like Flickr located under Folder view mixed in with the other headings?

This is done because the server uses the same navigation tree for Folder View that it uses for external devices. This makes it possible for you to display Flickr photos on photo picture frames that don’t even work with the Internet.

  • I noticed a program called "twonkymediaserverwatchdog.exe" running in the Windows Task Manager. What does it do?

This program runs in the background and restarts the TwonkyMedia server whenever a user clicks on the Restart Server or Rebuild Database buttons in the Server Settings pages.

  • Is TwonkyMedia manager available in languages other than English?

Yes, TwonkyMedia manager ships with support for six different languages: English, French, German, Dutch, Italian and Spanish.

  • The installer for TwonkyMedia manager is only about 7MB. Why does the Add/Remove Control Panel say TwonkyMedia manager is much larger?

To improve performance, TwonkyMedia manager creates indexes on your hard disk.

  • I’m using TwonkyMedia manager with a HP Media Smart server. How can I turn off Windows Media Connect?

You can disable Windows Media Connect by clicking on Settings and Media Sharing. If your devices still see WHS after doing this and you’re an advanced user, you can RDP directly to an HP MediaSmart server and go to Windows Services and disable the Windows Connect Server there. Click Apply and restart to complete this action.

  • I miss the Web browser view of media that TwonkyMedia v4.4 had. Is there a way to get it back?

Yes. Navigate to the TwonkyMedia folder located here: C:\Program Files\TwonkyMedia. Make a shortcut to the file called:

twonkymediaserverconfig.exe. After running that file, you’ll see a taskbar icon running in the lower right-hand corner of your screen.

  • I'm having problems trying to play the handpicked Internet radio stations on my PS3. I'm getting invalid or unknown data type messages. What can I do about this?

Internet radio does not work on the PS3. The PS3 cannot play audio streams without a set duration.

  • Why can’t I fast-forward or rewind external devices in the Now Playing window?

Not all digital media players support trick-playback modes like fast-forward and rewind. For that reason, for now we’re only allowing users to skip to the next or previous selection in a playback queue.

  • Where can I find a trial version of the TwonkyMedia Server?

The TwonkyMedia Server can be downloaded from the following link: http://www.twonkymedia.com/TM_server_download.html You may use the server for evaluation purposes without any charge for a period of 30 days

  • My TwonkyMedia Server isn’t detected from any of my other UPnP/DLNA devices in the home network. What are the likely causes?

Here are some suggestions for troubleshooting this problem:

Ensure that your TwonkyMedia Server is running on the same local network as your client device and there are no network routers or firewalls in between the TwonkyMedia Server and your client devices.
Please check if port 9000 is blocked by another application. Set the httpport in the twonkyvision-mediaserver.ini file to another free port (i.e. 9090).
Please check if port 9000 is blocked by your firewall. You have to give the TwonkyMedia Server free access to your local network to function properly.
On Linux systems make sure that the UDP multicast route is set correctly.

  • My TwonkyMedia Server seems to be working but no files are found by the server. What could be causing this problem?

Here are some suggestions for fixing this problem:

Ensure that the server is pointing to the proper location to find your content:
    1. Open the TwonkyMedia Server config page with your browser: http://<ip-address-of-your-server:9000>/config
    2. Click on the “Sharing” link on the left side of the menu
    3. Click on the Browse button on the right to traverse into your filesystem to set the proper folder locations with your content.
Ensure that the pulldown menu option is set properly for the type of content in your folder. Set the pulldown menu option (Music-only, Pictures-only, Video-only, or All content types) so that it properly matches the type of content in your folder. For example, if you have the pulldown menu set to “Music-only” it will ignore any Photos found in this folder.
Don’t use the setting “scantime -1” with network drives. Set scantime to 0 and rebuild the database.

  • My TwonkyMedia Server seems to be working but it is finding all of my content and I wish to limit which folders it uses for content.

Here are some suggestions for fixing this problem:

Identify the folders that you wish to expose through the TwonkyMedia Server

  • Where can I find the TwonkyMedia Server .ini file?

The server .ini file is called twonkymedia-server.ini Under Windows this file is located under the directory: C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data\TwonkyMedia Under UNIX/Linux this file is located in the installation directory of the server executables. Note: On the first invocation of the server, it will first use the settings from the file called twonkymedia-server-default.ini file to populate the main .ini file. Afterwards, when a user setting is changed, only the main .ini file is updated. If at anytime the user invokes the command to reset the to default settings then the server will reset the main .ini file with the settings from the default.

  • I get the error "page not found" when opening the server configuration pages in my Internet browser.

Clear the cache in your Internet Browser.

  • What ports are used by the TwonkyMedia Server?

The ports used by the server are as follows: UDP ports 1030, 1900, 9080 TCP ports starting at 9000 until a free port is found.

  • TwonkyMedia does not bind to the LAN port on my PC? How do I fix this?

To bind TwonkyMedia to the LAN port on your PC please 'disable' the SSDP option on the PC's set up admin panel.

  • How do I stop the TwonkyMedia Server?

For Windows XP, use the tray icon. For Linux; on startup the server creates the file /var/run/mediaserver.pid. The server can be stopped with: kill 'cat /var/run/mediaserver.pid'

  • The server does not mount/share my network drives when running as a system service. How do I fix this?

When the server is installed as a system service the shares may not have been mounted at startup time - or the access rights are different. Please try to start the server in the autostart folder under a user account.

  • Which versions of Windows are supported?

    Windows XP, Windows Vista

  • Where can I find UPnP client for Windows?

A Windows UPnP client is provided with our own TwonkyMedia Manager. You can find it here: http://www.twonkymedia.com/manager_download.html

  • How should I configure Antispy to work with the TwonkyMedia Server?

Please change the configuration of Antispy to "Standard" or "Windows Update", at least until the configuration of the TwonkyVision server is finished.

  • I get error message on setup with Vista, what could be the problem?

If there is an error message on setup please set "User Access Control" to off.

  • Vista and the server does not scan a certain directory, what could be the problem?

Share the directories/drives affected and ensure that "password control" is turned off [this is a new part of sharing in Vista].

  • On Vista the server seems to scan directories but does not pickup photos and videos.

Go into the properties of the drive/directory that you have shared and then select the "Security" Tab. REMOVE the generic "USERS" from the system.

  • On Vista the server does not store the license key or any changes which are made on the configuration pages.

The server needs admin rights. Please right click the TwonkyMedia icon and select "start as Administrator".

  • My Linux server is not being detected. What could be the problem:

Here are some suggestions for troubleshooting this issue:

Use the -ip commandline switch to specify the IP address of your NIC. The ifconfig command prints it (usually for device eth0).
    - Check if you have the multicast route added: route | grep 240.0.0.0
    - If the output is empty, add the multicast route: route add -net 224.0.0.0 netmask 240.0.0.0 dev eth0

  • How to enable multicast routing on Mandrake Linux?

Enable the multicast routing on Mandrake Linux with the following command: ifconfig eth0 allmulti

  • How do I enable autostart of the server under Linux?

The mediaserver option "-D" means: start mediaserver as a background process. It is similar to "mediaserver &", but does not mean "autostart".

Configuring "autostart" in Linux is totally different - and more complicated - than in Windows. Many different Linux distributions are available and unfortunately they all differ slightly in autostart configuration. The following is a general outline which might help in many cases:

After the Linux kernel has booted, the system starts up into a so-called "user-mode run level". A typical "user-mode run level" is "run level 3" (you may try the command "runlevel" - if exists in your Linux - to find out). In the following we simply assume that user-mode run-level is 3.

When Linux is starting up to user-mode run level 3, it looks for files located in the directory /etc/init.d/rc3.d starting with a capital "S" (for start) followed by two digits and an arbitray name. These files are typically executable shell-scripts (but also binaries and commands are allowed). These files are executed by a superuser shell (in the order of the digits, with the command line parameter "start"). When Linux is shut down from runlevel 3, all commands starting with a capital "K" (for kill) following by two digits are executed by a superuser shell (in the order of the digits, with the command line parameter "stop").

In the following we assume that your mediaserver (and the .ini file) are located in /opt. You should create the start script in /etc/init.d/rc3.d/S99mediaserver with the following contents:
    #!/bin/sh
    cd /opt
    /opt/twonkymedia -D

and the stop script in /etc/init.d/rc3.d/K99mediaserver with the following contents:

    #!/bin/sh
    killall twonkymedia

Make sure that both scripts have the execute bit set ("chmod +x /etc/init.d/rc3.d/*mediaserver"). After rebooting your Linux machine the mediaserver should be "up".

  • How do I redirect the Twonky web config pages with apache?

You need to change your /etc/httpd/httpd.conf as follows:
    <blockquote><IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteLog /var/log/httpd/rewrite_log
    RewriteLogLevel 9
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} /mediaserver/.*
    RewriteRule ^/mediaserver(.*) http://127.0.0.1:9000$1 [P] [L]
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} http://my.webserver.de/mediaserver.*
    RewriteRule ^(.*) http://my.webserver.de/mediaserver$1 [R]
    </IfModule></blockquote>

  • My playlists do not show up or are empty?

The playlist files contain the path names to the MP3 files. If the playlists are generated on a Windows system the following adjustments are necessary:

Replace all backslashes by forwardslashes \ -> /
Change the path to the full qualified Linux path, e.g.
    c:\my documents\my music -> /usr/home/me/my documents/my music

Be aware of upper/lower case path names. Windows path names are not case sensitive, Linux path names are case sensitive, so make sure that the path to the file is also correct regarding upper/lower case characters in the path.

Avoid special chars (e.g. German umlauts) in the path, as the file systems on Windows and Linux handle these differently and therefore the server may not be able to find a file on a Linux system if a special char is part of the path or filename.

  • Which version of Winamp is supported by TwonkyMedia Server?

Winamp Version 5 and above is supported.

  • My special characters (e.g. Umlauts) are garbled when importing my iTunes library.

The problem is that the UTF-8 encoding of iTunes (version 6) is broken, e.g. the character ü is exportet as "u%CC%88" but should be a %C3%BC. Update to the latest version of iTunes.

  • My iTunes library doesn’t play, what could be the problem?

Please set your music directories as shared directories in the server configuration pages. Also please make sure that you do not use DRM-protected iTunes content – this can only be played back by iTunes itself.

  • My Denon device supports streaming JPEG from a UPnP media server, but TwonkyMedia only provides it with music.

This will be fixed in the next release. In the meantime, please go to the server configuration page and select Clients/Security from the menu on the left. For the entry that represents your Denon device select "Generic Media Player" from the drop down list instead of "Denon".

  • I get disconnects with my Netgear MP101

Enable SSID broadcast on the wireless network - and get the newest firmware update from Netgear.

  • SMS style search sometimes does not work on Philips clients.

SMS search is disabled when you enable the shuffle mode on the client. This is a known issue of the Philips client and can not be solved by the server software.
